I meant to mention last week that one day recently (May 9), I had something happen to me that, I imagine, will increase in frequency in the coming years.

I bought some items from Westfort Bulk Zone where I now shop frequently and saw 10% discount flash across the cashier read-out, but I didn't inquire.

When I got home and checked the receipt, I saw that I had been given a discount ... as a Senior!

BTW another cash register story: At Stupidstore (especially) I always watch the readout as my items are rung in. My salmon appeared to cost $4.97. I thought it was $4.48 and I did inquire. This was the Express Line and I suspect I wouldn't have, had there been people behind me -- but there weren't.

And so the phone call was made and (I imagine) a rollerskater was dispatched.

I was right. The computer was wrong.

So ask.

I believe this was held in St. Stephen's Anglican basement, though the youth pictured were from St. Thomas'.

Matt and Sadie say thank you for the support of their trip to the Nu-Vision Project in Rwanda this coming July.

In Memoriam

Alan George Pepper, resident of Thunder Bay, died on Tuesday, 10th May, 2005 [a year ago today] in the TBRHSC as a result of the consequences of organ failure, resulting from diabetes.

Alan was born 21st June, 1933 in Balham, London, England, shortly thereafter moving to Mitcham, Surrey, England, where he lived until the age of 18, when he was called up for National Service with the Royal Fusiliers and the Royal Army Educational Corps. Prior to this he went to Mitcham County Grammar School in Mitcham and took his National Educational Certificate.

In 1949 he started working at the Merton and Morden Public Library, where he met Sheila, and worked in public libraries for the rest of his life. In 1963 he brought his family to Fort William, Canada and held various positions with what subsequently became the Ontario Library Service.

Part-time education had been a part of Alan's life since he first left school at 16. The professional courses of the (British) Library Association commenced before his immigration and he immediately began studying at Lakehead University, obtaining a B.A. in Psychology in 1972 and an Honours B.A. in Sociology in 1979.

Alan married Sheila (Griffiths) in 1955 and they would have celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in September of this year.

Alan was predeceased by his parents, Frederick James and Winifred Mary in 1975 and 1969 respectively and by numerous uncles and aunts. He is survived by Sheila, sons, Adrian Roland David (Chris) in Waterloo and Richard Evelyn Paul (in town), daughter, Geraldine Elizabeth Anne Glisson (Byron) in Georgia, U.S. and grandchildren, Robin Anne, Derek Allan, Douglas Arthur, Gregory Earl, Beverly Elizabeth, Mitchell Edward and Clifford Austin Livingston and by sister, Margaret Anne Pratt(Robert) in Nottinghamshire, England as well as cousins, nieces and nephews.

Alan's favourite occupation was Rotary International which he joined in 1967, holding many offices in the Fort William Rotary Club, becoming District Governor (District 5580) in 2001. Respecting Alan’s wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2005 at 1:00pm in the Church of Christ (corner Redwood and Edward Streets) officiated by Mr. Eric Bailey. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Rotary Foundation or charity of your choice.

A tree will be planted in memory of Alan Pepper in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 25, 2006.

Al Drinkwalter was a Dorion camper and staff member and a Church of Christ Young Peoples Person. Here's photo of what he spent much of his time doing at DBC.

Today at Val (next to Sally) Jolene said "Thank you for coming in." rather than "Have a nice day."

Though it still sounded scripted, it struck me as a better choice than H.A.N.D., because it has a better chance of being sincere. After all, in part because I (and others) came in, Jolene still has a job. Therefore, though I am a stranger to her, she can be grateful for my presence.

If this is indeed a new trend, I am *happy* about it. (Still pondering that middle section of un/happiness in my life, but haven't pulled my thoughts together yet.)

I would however like to see Jolene and her fellow cashiers given seats as in (I hear) many places in Europe. This just seems like a good way to treat one's workers. I mentioned this to a shop manager once and he thought he'd find it hard to motivate his cashiers that way. ???

(And I still think Tim's should take debit.)

The Pizza Song: Apr. 25/06

Both guitar tracks were played by Sarah who doesn't play guitar. I added the bass. My drum machine played the basic drum track (first) and Jean (youth sponsor) added the rest of the percussion. All three of us winged the vocals. Every track was done in one take each and so I think we should be called "The Won Take Oneders".

Yes, Sarah doesn't play the guitar, but I "fixed it in the mix". I found one little bit of the "lead guitar" track that sort of fit what we were doing and copied and pasted it in a few places and made an intro out of it.

I think this is a bit of a parable of how God can take our lives, fix them in the mix and produce a beautiful result -- at least as beautiful as The Pizza Song!
